You will find all volvo dealers very good at finding things not done.
Mine was able to tell me the brake fluid had never been changed on my car. It has twice in my ownership but as I do it myself they have no record. Also ask them to change the gearbox oil on a manual transmission, there is not even a price on the volvo menue and they will tell you it's not nessesary because volvo don't list it. Again I change it myself every 2 years. Then there's the coolant, doesn't need changing according to volvo, except there was a time period where the factory filled coolant corrosion inhibitors died, brown coolant was the giveaway, I have changed mine and now monitor closely. Then the power steering fluid that eats the pipes when the corrosion inhibitors die, again I change mine every 2 years. There's an awful lot of preventative maintenance goes on with my car that Volvo are not aware of because I do it myself. So why does mine go to the dealer for service, simple any upgrades due on the electronics. Paul. |

Years ago I had a Volvo 460 diesel which used the Renault 19 engine.
Volvo cam belt interval 70,000 miles, Renault cambelt interval 80,000 miles and the belt in a Volvo box had Renault written on it. This is the reason volvo had a reputation for reliability, change early and nothing breaks Of course you could take a chance and you may be lucky but having had the job of repairing a sisters fiat after it took 6 teeth out of the cam belt I don't take chances. Smashed valve guide, broken valves bent con rods, yes we got it going but it was never the same as with 2 pistons having a short stroke it was never smooth, no she would not pay for new con rods or even the gaskets to pull and measure them, best we could do was put a dti on them at tdi. Paul. |

The dealer tells me the aux belt and tensioner is now every 3 years (still 54k if sooner), not 5 as I'd understood to be the case.

It depends on the car / model / year. But one thing is certain, of course: every dealer will do their utmost to convince you that it needs to be done sooner rather than later...

The aux belt is changed every 54000 MILES or 10 years ( with cambelt ) it is the Miles which are important not time .. The aux belt tensioner ( And belt again ) is changed every 108000 miles or 10 years with the cambelt ... that is for the 5 cylinder diesel 2007 onwards

There were quite a few exchanges on this subject here over the years and it still remains a mystery, compounded by dealer's pushy attitude... The problem is dealers mistakenly (or rather: knowingly) sort of misread information in VIDA and claim that this needs to be done on 54k service (for 18k interval) or its multiply, without any consideration to both vehicle mileage or age. I have had this pointless conversation nearly every year when my vehicle was serviced, with: 0. Dealer having added a note to my service sheet / invoice that I refused to have it changed back in 2011 (car was still under its original warranty. Mileage was below 54k. It was service #3 [54k] indeed) 1. Aux belt being swapped FoC by dealer back in 2017 - it was done without my prior knowledge and authorisation 2. Main service carried out incorrectly earlier this year as customer representative was very much more interested in getting me to have cambelt changed (ahead of the time, but it was service #10 [108k] indeed) rather than concentrate on the service activities themselves. |

When your car reaches 108,000 miles or 10 years old (Whichever comes first), then get the timing belt, aux belt, a/c belt & aux belt tensioner replaced. However, I'd look for an independent Volvo specialist to do the job if you don't fancy it yourself because they'd do it at a fraction of the cost to what the dealership are looking for. £900 is absolutely crazy for this! My D5 has now done 448,000 miles and I have owned it since 2 and a half years old. I have regularly replaced the Aux Belt and tensioner every 54000 as originally specified, I have read the Tensioner is now being recommended at 108000 but a week before my most recent scheduled change it had done approx 300 miles short of 54000 and seized with the outcome being I needed a replacement cylinder head. I had been getting a "chirping" noise on cold starts for few weeks previous but didn't expect it to go before 54k. Hence I would recommend sticking to the original 54000 miles change especially if you get a noise from it.
