Default Help Needed ASAP-Turbo

Hi Guys,

Just been reading this thread and found it very interesting.
I have a Volvo 1998 S40 1.9 T4 CD, the turbo has gone and needs to be replaced.
I can't afford to spend loads tho, can anyone help point me in the right direction? The thread says any 14T turbo will fit. Do all Volvo's with a turbo have a 14T turbo?
Thanks for reading!!
Dale

the 14t turbo is the one you need, the 2.0t has a 12t which is not what you want on your t4 so make sure its a 14t from a t4

i would have thought a 14t is too big for a turbo diesel?the later 102/115bhp diesels used the garrett gt15 and gt17 respectedly. as you have the older diesel (dti) engine you can try looking at the laguna mark1 for a turbo as the diesel lumps are renault

It's petrol Matt

14t is only fitted to the T4. Is the turbo definitely gone? What are your symptoms?

Edit: Dandle beat me to it again

The car was idling very badly, cutting out at traffic lights etc.
Acceleration was very rough, lagging power.
Now the fan comes on not long after starting up.
I've not been using the car for a few weeks coz of the probs.
I had a diagnostic done, it came up with O2 sensors.

I have replaced the Lambda Sensor on exhaust,
Replaced airflow sensor,
Replaced spark plugs,
Replaced coil packs and leads.

I'm running out of ideas now only thing I can think of now is the turbo.

Unless there is seriously high milage or something passed through the vanes of the turbo then it's unlikely it's damaged. Take off the cold air feed to the turbo and you'll be able to spin the turbo shaft with your finger. A slightest/minute movement in the shaft is normal.

This could be the fuel pump. Is there a loud whining from under the rear passanger seat?

Replacing the MAF with an aftermarket type can cause strange symptoms like the fan coming on unexpectedly

Did you replace with genuine Volvo parts? It's a process of elimination and with the T4 engine being a sensitive one it's best advised to source OEM parts.

I'm with the above, probably not the turbo with those symptoms. Sound more like the MAF, geniune ones are expensive but unless you get a good aftermarket one, not a recon one with a resistor across in place of one of the wires, you can have loads of wierd symptoms. Fan coming on after engine off for no reason etc etc.
Mines done 166k on my T4 and needs a rebuild (burns oil rather too quickly these days so she'll be VOR shortly to have turbo rebuild and he FMIC fitted) but still boosts fine at 1.2 bar and goes like stink.
