It's the testing regime WLTP rather than the manufacturers, to be honest.
They might maximise their chances of the best results under the rules, but the gap to reality is more about having a level comparison between different cars - even if it's 30% out! |

I have just bought a 21 plate XC40 T5 Recharge with 15,000 miles on the clock. When fully charged the car says 24 miles range but I get about 18. On the good side if I do a long journey, I use the "Hold" function to run on just the engine and I've been getting 47mpg which I think is really good. I do about 65-70 on the motorway.

The car is still new as the engine beds in and you learn to not use the power so often and do longer journeys and summer arrives again you will find it improves. If you live in a hilly area it wont help much I'm afraid.

Its nothing to do with manufacturers using artistic license - economy tests follow strict laboratory testing protocols. They are only really useful as a benchmark between different vehicles rather than an absolute on one.

When on a steady 60 on cruise we see getting 43 MPG now everything has settled down. Not as good when up to 70 but still fairly happy .

Now we have got used to the car our economy has improved up to around the 45 to 49 MPG cruising at 60 - 65 MPH. Even got a reading of 51.4 MPG on a recent Run to Manchester.

I was considering this as I do a 30-40 mile daily commute but these numbers are a bit disappointing. I am just thinking if a hybrid option is better until better batteries are available.

My old V60 did typically 22-25 miles electric range against the theoretical 30m. The newer V60 hybrid definitely would have covered you 30-40m commute.

Wondered if you could advise on anything that has changed ? We are thinking of buying the XC40 B3 Plus and are concerned about the fuel consumption reported in other places. Any info would be greatly appreciated !
