Thanks for the replies!
The 7 seats aren't a major priority but if I can fit them myself after if I can only find a 5 sweater I would look at it.couple of lads at work have the 90 and I'm really not keen on them, so gonna give them a miss! Pub reviews are always more honest than any motor publication review, and exactly the recommendations I was hoping for. Thanks for your experience. Think I am favouring towards to XC70 compared to the Audi Allroad. What about the difference in tax models? What is the tax for <07 and >07? And also read about the transmission problems the XC70s suffer from....what years had this? Is it both the auto and gear tropic boxes? And I've read about checking transmission fluid levels and clarity which I'll do on any that I seriously look at buying. Thanks again. |

The transmission wind up was NOT a Haldex problem, but was Volvo's Viscous coupling, thankfully removed from MY 2003. It only worked once the car was in motion - so useless in muddy fields. I had it on the sane car as the seven seat option. Pity as I laved the colour - polartic blue. |

light can/car - berlingo/doblo/kangoo - very versatile. Especially the kangoo trekka with 4wd and a bot more ground clearance. The old fiat panda 4wd was bloody good, still see loads of them about in rural europe. No idea about the new one, I imagine it too will do the job else fiat have made a major ballsup

As True Blue said the original problems with the AWD system was the viscous coupling, in 2002-2003 Volvo changed the AWD system to the Haldex ll coupling which had been used by Audi/VAG but IIRC Volvo (in their wisdom) did not fit the same size spline shaft on the output of the gearbox but a much smaller spline shaft. These shafts suffered numerous problems with the splines shearing under load, sometimes the gearbox would make an awful noise on others there was no noise only a loss of AWD when the car was driven on gravel, ice or any other loose surface. Between 2003 and 2007 the spline shaft size and the number of splines was increased until 2006 (initially in the USA) when the Haldex lll system was introduced and that, in conduction with a much larger spline drive, solved the problems. By the time the Phase 3 or Gen 3 AWD Volvos were introduced the problem was completely solved.
If your are really interested here is a description of the Haldex lll systems and how it works, the link is to Audi/VAG and specifically the Audi TT but the system is virtually the same: http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/Audi/TT...StudyGuide.pdf pages 34 and 35 explain when the Haldex coupling engages and disengages. A comment on an American Volvo website reported this: "Volvo calls Haldex lll & lV Instant Traction, because it will activate the rear wheels with just 15 degrees (1/24th) of a front wheel spin. And it sends 60 ft-lbs of pre-charged torque to the rear wheels instantaneously. This is an improvement over Haldex ll which will send torque more gradually to the rear wheels after 1/7th (51 degrees) of a front wheel spin."
