Diesels have a lot of hidden costs.

Plus I'm running just under 300bhp and get 36-37 on a cruise, Diesel is more expensive so that's the equivalent of 40mpg in a diesel.

There's not as much in it as you might think.

BMW is known to tweak their cars to get as low as possible consumptions in the EWG test cycle, which is a bit of throttle here, a little there and done. As soon as you exceed these ranges, the BMW will simply suck back so much, that you won't really be happy with it. Neighbours are fanatic about their BMWs. They have a 330d, a 135i cabbi and a 535d. Basically all the "top end" engines. The one which gets "near to" factory MPG is the 135i. The other two are well beyond "good and bad".

I know that if they go wrong they can be costly but I certainly wouldnt turn a BMW Diesel down and I bet half the people who knock a Diesel would soon change there mind if they took a nice remapped 535D for a spin, they are unbelievable for an oil burner

Hmm, interesting posts.

To be honest, I wouldn't knock back a remapped 320D or something similar. It's just the costs and the fact that everybody has got one, plus they are useless in the snow! Also like the Volvos, people generally prefer dealer service history when selling which will cost!

It'll be interesting to see how good this triple turbo engine is when it's officially released. Even if it gets 30-35mpg that's still pretty impressive given the power it's got.

I can't really mock BMW though as they do make some lovely cars, a friend of mine has the petrol 330CI and that 3 liter 6 cylinder sounds absolutely lovely and as much as I hate to admit it to him it does feel quite a bit nicer on the road than my T4 - It just feels like it's been setup better for the power.

Oh take no notice of the BMW (knockers) half of them aint got a clue or have never driven one, I love them and iam not the stereotypical wnaker associated with them, they make decent cars full stop, no matter who drives them, I have had tons of Beemers, I have never worn a suite except on my wedding day, and dont use sunbeds or wear foundation on my face, I wear Dealer boots with tracksuit bottoms, have a skinhead 90% of the time and my hands are not soft and manacured but rough and engrained with axle grease, plus I know how cars work and know a good or well built one when I see one, but I would have one tomorrow.

Volvos have got a stigma attached to them too, but I can honestly say that the people who drive/own them or are on this forum are the most down to earth and genuine, friendly bunch of guys and girls I know, they dont all wear green wellies and own 3 Labrador dogs and so fookin what if they did, I for one couldnt give a monkeys' what people thought of me for driving a Volvo or a Beemer or an Audi (Id have one of them as well)

I'll agree with that, however one trip on the M25 and you'll see more men/women in suits in BMWs than any other car lol. I think the majority of owners of BMWs have them because they think they're the 'car to have' and because 'everybody else has them', NOT because they actually know anything about cars and whats good to drive. BMWs are a bit like iPhones I think, everyone wants one because everyone else seems to have it. Both BMW and Apple have benefited hugely from these kind of people. Both companies could make nothing but crap and people would still buy them because everyone else owns one....

Hey ho, I'm 21, about to graduate from uni, drive a Volvo, own an Android smartphone and couldn't be happier

Good on you mate, I like the older BMWs TBH especially the earlier 5 series's, had loads of em, and nothing can put a smile on your face like ripping an old 535i manual about, they go well, cheap as chips and I for one Love the shape especially of the E34, just one of those cars I promised myself as a kid then I went out and bought loads of them since from the 1.8 to the M5 and all in between, a real over engineered car that is still going strong years on, picture of an E34 below:

BMW have marketing all wrapped up eh? They just sell sell and then sell again!

I may be wrong, but I think BMW is owned by one family?

True what you say about suited up BMW drivers. Most will be company cars I would imagine.Actually as cheap if not cheaper than the ubiquitous Ford and Vauxhall on a lease and over the term.

Regards

I've got quite a thing for those too, I love the E30 M3s (http://www.s14.ctmnet.de/0172/03.jpg)

My uncle has an old 94 reg 750i 5.4l V12, It's sorn at the moment and doesn't get used. It's a real shame as it's immaculate but at insurance group 20 and anything from 11-17mpg + £130 to fill up it's not the best of cars to own these days

He's tried shifting it for as little as £1000 but nobody is interested due to high cost of ownership. Tragic really as it's a lovely motor.
