Hi Richard,
The switch on the side of the auto box has four connections. Two are the starter inhibit switch, the other two are the reverse light switch. If the spade terminals are still there, the starter terminals are narrower than the light. The Haynes manual shows the light switch wires are white and blue/yellow, and the inhibit switch, both black, for post 1970 vehicles with carb engine.

thanks all, switch was fine, problem however was a decayed wire to the starter motor. replaced and started no probs. thanks for all the suggestions.

now I need some parts
