The 115bhp D2 engine is available in the new C-Max and in the next gen Focus out next month. Probably will appear in various PSA cars if not already there.

I thought the previous 1.6D 110 bhp was 16-valve, certainly the 90bhp version offered in Fords/PSA was 8-valve.

Everywhere I check is saying the 110BHP version is 16V DOHC and the 90BHP is SOHC 8V, in Mini, Focus and Volvo specs online.

Is this what a D3/D4 engine should look like please. Can someone confirm?

The D4 in my V50 looks just like that apart from mine having a front strut and the brake/clutch fluid filler being in a different location.

You can also tell the 5 cylinder engines by their note when driving.

Yeah that would be the obvious off beat of the 5 cylinder note but some are a fair distance away and want to be sure of what it is before I travel and find out its not the car I'm after.

Also am I right in thinking the cars with D2 engines have single exahust pipes out the back and D3/D4 have twin pipes either side of the rear bumper?

The D4 has twin pipes as you describe. I don't know about the D3 and D2.

I've had a look on volvo site and found that D3/D4 has twin pipes out back and D2 you cant see any pipes as they are under the rear bumper.

I know the 1.6D and 2.0D have been dropped early 2010 and I think the D5 might also have been too.
Just a quick note clarifying engine codes on the D2 variant:
D4162T = 1.6D 8v single overhead cam (Eco drivE) - This is what I have in my v50 btw.
D4164T = 1.6D 16v double overhead cam.
