This backs up my point.
Whilst those figures sound high in car terms, they're still a significant toning down of your bike's potential until it's run in.

I was quite gentle with ours for first 200 miles, then revved to 3,000 rpm regularly to 1,000 miles, varying the speed a lot on motorway, and to 3,500rpm for next thousand. Then I forgot, we are on 3,200 miles now! Dealer did tell me the engines are effectively run in at the factory so no real need to run in.

I think the first oil change is more important than running in, First oil change not at 18,000 miles but more at 1000, 2000 ect. these modern engines are run up at the factory to high rpms to check performance ect so its all ready been given a good rev. I would still take it gently until the first oil change and then go on as normal.

It doesn't surprise me that BMW feel their engines are more special than others.
They probably also claim that they run on unicorn tears and the emissions are leprechaun farts.
