Main dealers do a "health check" on virtually everything that rolls through their doors. How you figure them is down to your point of view. Some would say they're a good idea as they can identify things wrong you may not be aware of or things that need attention in the near future.Others would say they're a con job for the dealers to "upsell" more work on the car.Take your pick which camp you're in.

Last dealer service our car got the company was relieved of 500 sovs for oil, filter and front pads and some health thing. Droplinks were diagnosed failed and would cost 200 sovs plus another 200 for fitting had they been in stock. Apparently they had been ripping off so many that I was lucky they were out of stock that day. That was in 2007. Dealer had replaced the same links in 2006?! Sorry Sir did we say front on the invoice we meant rear?!**@@ This year the offending links failed the NCT test. I rest my case.
The lack of dealer stamps has affected the resale value of our car .............. Last edited by Brendan W; Oct 4th, 2018 at 21:22. |

Reciepts. Keep reciepts. Write in the book and keep the receipts,
Only a stupid person would shy away from receipts instead of a rubber stamp. Esp if receipts are accompanied by pics of new and old during service... Recently made a big difference when I sold my citroen, I had receipts and pics during service, the purchaser found this very reassuring and remarked it was nice to see the thoroughness. |

I had a similar rip-off experience at a main dealer - have not been back since.

Food for Thought:
1) What year and mileage is your car? (I always ask, silly me) 2) How long are you going to keep it? 3) Isn't it the case that used cars over there are really inexpensive? (Just how much could stamps in a book possibly get you?) 4) Do you know of any independent mechanics near you? (Maybe take this hit while you locate one.) Best of luck. Ain't no fun being raped by polite, smiling car people. |

If like me you keep the car for 10+years, and if you like the car, why would you not? ( getting bored with it don't count as a reason to sell )
then a fully stamped service record don't mean that much. Would I have gotten more for my 2002 V70 T5 with 240K, with a fully stamped service record; will I get more for my 2004 V70R with 112K? I doubt it. But I know the services have been done, with the correct oils/fluid/components as I use the money I save on labour to buy (usually but not always) Volvo dealer bits when working on the car. screw the stamps! paperwork showing parts purchased / invoice for parts fitted is worth more to anyone buying the car than the fact Volvo did it.

I paid a Volvo main dealer to service my 2003 V70 D5 twice during 2004 price £460 each time and all they did was change oil and filters plus knacker one of the zenon headlights by using a pressure washer on it. I have used the cheapest available A3/B4 oil average cost £12/5L since 2004 plus cheapest filters cost around £4 , its now done 245,000 miles. There is no smoke or obvious engine wear, when the car eventually becomes uneconomic to keep I have a feeling it will be because one of the expensive modules fails rather than the engine.
