A 2lt, 4 pot diesel for Porsche money. It's crazy.

I love the look of the xc90 and the interior....but the engines and pricing are hilarious compared to rivals.
For the type of vehicle it is and for the market it is built for and competes in
the new XC90 is spot on. At the very top of its class. Some could even say ahead of its time.

Volvo's not alone - it's pretty easy to spec a 2 litre (2.1 litre in Merc's case) 4 cyl diesel SUV from BMW and Merc to well over £60k.
The BMW X5 25d uses a humble 2 litre 4 cyl diesel...
And in the Merc you can't get the third row seats.

There's no doubt the less enlightened, or dare I say it, the small willy brigade will always be put off by a 4 pot motor in a big car like this. But be in no doubt this is the future. The down-sizing has already begun at BMW and Merc etc with the 25d and 250d versions of the X5 and ML, and they've been very well received. The next gen versions of both cars will feature more 4 pot options for definite and those will be the best sellers.

I came from the 5 pot 215hp engine in my XC60 to the new D5 engine in the XC90 and it is a vastly superior engine in every respect. For me the most impressive aspect is its willingness to rev out to the redline and the smoothness as it does so. It'll do 45mpg on long runs fully-laden too.

I definitely not a XC90 fan boy, the choppy ride is grating around town, but they've nailed the engine 100%.

If I were spending that kind of hard cash on a car Id want it to look like that amount of cash, not a used shopping trolley. Bentley every time. Decent Bentley for say £20k and the rest towards my boat.

....but you can get a nice v6 or v8.

2litre 4 pot only is a joke and US cars will soon have made in china stamped on the bottom.

Volvo are fleecing their customers.

Cheap production methods, cheap engines, higher prices.

Volvo are also not a true rival for BMW, Audi and merc IMO. Even if they try to be.

Top of it's class with a 2litre diesel?

The standard suspension is also woefull.

As for ahead of it's time. My neighbour had a 2litre 4 pot frontera in the 90's.

There is nothing groundbreaking about the new xc90 apart from it's extremely low production costs.

I really disagree.

It sounds cheap in such a nice looking car and looks lost under the bonnet.

The old D5 is getting on, but it sounds like a premium diesel IMO rather than a focus/golf engine.

It's a shame because I love the look of the car.

I also thought the "small willy brigade" bought big flash looking cars (like the new xc90)....not cars with big engines

For me a 2litre diesel is out of place in a huge, premium suv.

I also found all the power to be delivered low down in the new xc90 like all other 2litre diesels.

I am interested in your comment. Can you explain how you have come to this view? Is it from experience of driving a demo car with standard suspension or a review you have read? I can find very little on the comparison of air vs standard. In fact the only bit I can find is this from the DT:

"The Volvo XC90 can feel a little unsettled over patched-up city streets, but on faster roads it rides poor surfaces with control and aplomb. In fact, the standard suspension is good enough to make the optional air suspension feels like an unnecessary extravagance."

Thanks

I've driven both air and standard and thought both were extremely good handling our wonderful/woeful British roads. I had the standard suspension car for 3 days on all types of road.
