Maximum towing capacity of the of the V70 is 1600kg apparently, should be able to pull 1300kg well enough. I would try as you suggested and keep the revs up a bit more to get the best performance. I have recently changed from a diesel mondeo to a C70 T5 and although the T5 is much more powerful as it's a turbo charged petrol you have to rev it much higher than the mondeo. I'm still getting used to it and it feels strange having to rev it, I change gear at about 3000 rpm for normal driving and it doesn't seem have the same low down power as the mondeo. After 3000 there is loads of power.

Hi mike, you are correct 1600kg max, my 1800kg was wrong.
im going to take the caravan for another run today and drive it a little harder into the revs, im pretty sure its me at fault and not the car, as i said earlier i really dont want to change the car i like it, i will let you know how i get on.

Default Volvo's Tow-spec Table

www.volvoclub.org.uk/pdf/towing-specs.pdf

Must have been compiled around 1993/4 as the 240 is still there, and there is no diesel 850.
All 800 & 900 cars are listed as 1600kg max - will be based on their weight rather than power output and probably rounded down to a nice round number for simplicity.
The 85% towing limit for your model (equivalent 850 2.5 10v) is 1267kg, which is joint highest with the 2.0 20v across the 850 range, and this is thanks to it being slightly heavier than the 2.5 20v and the T-5 (though I'm sure you'd be happy with their power outputs!).

just took the caravan out again on the same route, same weight ect, but this time drove it into the revs more, result .... its like a different car, so its the driver who was gutless not the car !
really pleased, now i can keep the car, i may think about getting some spring assists or heavy duty rear springs just to firm it up a touch,
thanks for all posts, Stu

Glad you've sussed it, there's been threads before about V70 2.5 10V performance and I think the general idea came out as give it some welly, it does go against the grain in a car like the V70 which feels like it should be a leisurely drive, but it can almost be chalk and cheese between 2000rpm and 3000rpm.

The max towing load is computed actualy on the brake system of the car.

Ok, but the 85% towing limit is obviously based on the weight though - lesser values for T-5 and 2.5 20v...

there is no 85% limit, or law, the 85% rule is a guideline for novices ect, as outlined by the caravan council / clubs ect, its quite safe and legal to drive at 100% if you are considered experienced, Stu

Never mentioned any laws or legality. Just quoting academic figures from Volvo's table Stu, as was Scutyde.
