Having stopped the car with the footbrake, I apply the EHB then put the gear into neutral. When the lights change to red/amber, foot on brake and gear into drive. Slight pressure on the accelerator will release the EHB but, in my experience, not without a slight jerk which I do not like (always hated jerks). For this reason I've started pulling the EHB to release after putting the car into drive. This is a bit of a pain because of the awkward position of the EHB but it does give a smoother take-off. Having said that, if I am at the front of the queue I just use the accelerator to avoid holding others up

If blinded by the stoplights of the selfish git in front who can't be @rsed to use the handbrake (twice as bad if they have high level lights as well) I use the sun visor until their lights go off, telling me they are about to move off.

Is this a case of trying to make 2 wrongs equal a right?

As Richard Nixon said " If two wrongs don't make a right, try three". Could have been any politician really

Yes, absolutely, completely and utterly wrong, does seem to work where I live though!

'Stands on soapbox'
I think sitting on the brake lights at junctions/traffic lights, is lazy and a poor skill, not something that would be done during a driving test, unless things have changed since I took mine.

As for using the sun visor to reduce the glare, works on most cars, but the taller ones (like the XC60) it does not work as the lower brake lights are at eye level. If you can see the occupants of the car behind you bathed in a red glow, probably means you are sat on the brakes and blinding them.

'End of my soapbox'

Perhaps you need a cushion

But if you have "stop-start" surely that only works if you have your foot on the footbrake? Well at least that's how it worked on the Golf I had last week.

Perhaps it could be set up to automatically dim the brake lights when in operation.

I tend to make a judgement call based on how long I think it looks like I'll be stationary, if more than say half a minute I pop it into neutral and put the handbrake on. I think it stems from a life of manual change cars, this being my first auto, and I don't sit with it in gear at all at the lights or stopped. I just think it seems to strain too much given without any throttle and in drive it wants to move forwards. I also come from a racing driving and ideally I don't like the foot brake or handbrake applied as it transfers heat from the discs to the pads and calipers and leads to pad deposit build up on the discs, not really an issue on the Volvo I'm sure but it's in my mind. I also to not particularly like being dazzled (at night) by a mass of brake lights although more an annoyance than anything serious.

Nothing. Trying to influence other drivers' actions is counter-productive. There will always be inconsiderate people on the road as there are everywhere. The best you can do is not to get wound up and hope that your consideration will rub off on others.
