Stupid question time again then - if i don't have a dipstick, how can I refill the oil? Has anyone got any pics of how to do a change in a D5 185 if it differs from normal?

I've attempted a few little jobs on cars before and can call upon a mate who's OK, but I'd like to have a good understanding before I start !!!

If it's a 6 speed, it doesn't have one.

Instead, the oil level is checked from a combined drain/level plug underneath. The level plug is a small bolt in the larger drain plug and is removed to check the level. Once the small level plug is removed, oil should just overflow out of the centre of the drain plug but it is supposed to be done using the VIDA software to make sure the oil temperature is at the correct level.

The fill plug is a torx bolt on the top of the box (6 Speed ONLY) - BUT BEFORE TOUCHING IT, MAKE 100% SURE YOU KNOW YOU ARE UNDOING THE CORRECT BOLT.

If you undo the wrong one, you may release one of the bands inside the box.

Pete,

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Mine is the 6-speed, so I think that puts it a little out of my comfort zone.

I may have to ask the local specialist for a quote !!!

There is double plug on the bottom of your gearbox. If you undo small one a bit can check colour and smell of it. Do it on hot gearbox.

The 6 speed is pretty bomb proof normaly. It's Japanese made box by Asin Warner. Change the ATF every 48k or 4 years whichever comes first. It's a pumped change so you always have some old fluid in the mix even if you do it several times. It makes it a bit more expensive to do than a straight drain and refill like the V70 autobox even though its the same box without the geartronic programming.

The 5 speed costs about £3500 to recon. so I'd think the 6 speed would be similar if needed.
