Respect for keeping it on the road.
I recently had to do/get a load of work done for my mot. You could argue that any sensible person would've bought another car, but I'm proud to be keeping this one alive. Good luck.

Default Repairing an old car

If you really like the car , could you replace it for less than the cost of repairs?
Possibly , but most older cars need odd jobs done to keep them on the road.
Better the devil you know?

Yes , just got the MOT advisory 'minor corrosion on subframe'. I suppose something was bound to go wrong on a 20 year old car, so I will be interested to follow your progress. The only other advisory the vehicle has had was that some years ago one of the front brake hoses was worn, however this appears to have cured itself....

Ha ha ha, don't you just love that?!

Last year my 960 had knackered rear suspension bushes, that had apparently changed themselves for this year's test!

The V40 similarly has self-healing ARB bushes. These were an advisory in September 2011. Not mentioned for two years subsequent.

I would say go for it.

I did a fair amount to my old 940 two years ago to get it through the MOT (inc. Nivo delete, new exhaust, new rear brakes, front caliper refurb, new windscreen). Car sailed through last year and hopefully won't need much this year.

I also have an old Mercedes S class which I revived from the dead and learned how to weld on so I would suggest you tackle as much as you can yourself. Very rewarding experience.
