Rybrook Warrington are doing the clean and software upgrade on mine f.o.c this Thursday after I remonstrated to the service manager. The fact that I bought the car from them just last March, as an approved used Volvo, and no mention was made by them of this problem at the time, I will be taking up with the dealership director whilst the car is in the workshop. This is the third Volvo I have had, and to be honest it will probably be the last. It can`t hold a candle to the older models for build integrity and the way I have knowingly been sold a lemon by one of their dealers is beyond contempt.

Chasing Around
Hi Guys,
I am moving from post to post, thread to thread trying to swot up on everyone's comments. I visited the Volvocars website and saw the CEO video. Clever man. Anyway, it gave me an idea. While everyone appears to have written to Volvo Uk on this issue, I have taken the tack of writing to Volvo Sweden. I have Scandinanvian (Danish actually) bloodline (2nd Generation) and I aam blessed with all Scandinavian names. My belief is that I can stimulate a response from them on the ETM issue. I have advised them that I am in the process of having the ETM software upgrade and have spent a substantial sum on all the other solutions that garages have recommended. I have asked them to respond directly to me and not pass my letter on to Volvo UK. Will see what happens and advise. |

Well.........I've been!
The Software upgrade has been done and the Throttle body cleaned, plus some work on the Cooling fan which i don't think is related but was done as some form of recall? All of this was done FOC. I've now got to wait to see what the car does - I've only done about 30 miles since, so its too early to say. I did ask what would happen if the problem re-occured. i was told to bring it back and they'd have a look at it then! I'll keep you informed of any developments. Alan |

ETM gone
My S60 has this problem, my local dealer in Havant did the software update and replaced a fan (going to find out why) and clean the throttle unit. I collected the car drove 2 miles down the road before the warning lights were back on, so back it went. They called yesterday to tell me that the ETM would need replacing at a cost of £456.00 this is with the 20% discount Volvo UK are giving for a car over 5 years old, newer you get 50%. So off to CAB later to start going through the small claims court to try and get my money back, seeing as Volvo of North America has just extended the warranty on the ETM to ten years or 322,000km (200,000 miles) on the clock. Not fair being discriminated against just as I live in the UK.

I had mine done today by Doves of Horsham, polite and friendly service. The service manager said that they did the upgrade and cleaned it out and it appeared OK. Mines done 70k so I hope it will go a bit longer wthout dying (or at least until I sell it next year!)
The engine definately seems less susceptable to the revs dropping when you lift off, and the gear change seems smoother as a result as I have an auto. So far so good, I shall be keeping an eye on it. The guy said that the "safe mode" issue where it cuts your speed has only affected very few UK cars, only 4% apparently. Does anyone actually know of this happening?

As mentioned earlier in this thread, mine went in on Thursday for the clean and reprograme routine (f.o.c. still under Volvo used warrenty). Interestingly mine had not failed completly, the car just seemed sluggish, with a rough idle and very rough when cold. Thought I had better get it checked whilst still under warrenty incase it was the ETM . It now drives the best it has done since I bought it, so it looks like this problem can manifest itself in various ways before it fails completely. Incidently the service dept at Rybrook Warrington were quite upfront about this problem and helpfull. They admitted this may not solve it completley. I raised the issue with the sales manager who was instantly agressive, confrontational and pretty much denied the existance of this problem. The concern shown to a customer who had recently bought one of their cars was of the couldn`t give a damn variety, and certainly not what one would expect from a `premium` brand. My recent Volvo ownership experience continues to leave me very underwhelmed.

S60 ETM is it really new type ?
I am very suspicious that the after 2002 S60 ETMs really are different.
They look the same to me. I cannot see how they could do away with the carbon potentiometer and still use the same body shape of the ETM. I asked Volvo about this as I was enquiring about buying a new S60 but they refused to answer my question on this. They just said the information was not available. Does anyone have solid information on this ? Barry |

I'm pretty sure that the new ETM uses a Bosch unit, that uses a completely different method of controlling the fuel. No mechanical wear and tear.
Not sure why it can not be retro fitted to ME7 cars using the MM failing unit. Some excuse about software. Also, what about the pot used at the throttle peddal. That's going to wear out too for the same reason. Oli

Etm
I have owned my S60t since aug 2006,(2001 model), after a week I experienced 2 messages 1:- emmisions service required. 2 :-Reduced performance. I am a Traffic Cop so first port of call was the garage at work, who immediately noticed that the etm sensor had become dislodged. The tech at the garage sprayed a can of carb cleaner into the hole prior to refitting the sensor and revved the t**ts of it for a few seconds. As a result a load of what i assume is carbon was blown out the back and the problem solved.
However, the usual etm problem has returned (this week) and the idling is rough and a lack of power. I think a word with FRF Swansea is called for and a software upgrade. Quote:
