An amber light should make them flash amber. US model Porsches and Audis are set up with red lenses and amber lights and they work.

But surely it will fail the MOT due to non-compliance (indicators not amber). See the following link: http://www.ukmot.com/1-5.asp#Text_top.

d. that every direction indicator emits amber light, except vehicles first used before 1 September 1965 where both front indicators may be white and both rear indicators red d. does not show light of the appropriate colour
Indicators only have to show amber light, not actually be amber.

If it flashes red, then the police will pull you over. You might be able to get it to flash amber if you can get a very bright amber bulb in it.

Jim,
1st, Your cable left on Tuesday,
2nd, My vauxhall movano has a red Cluster on the back, Look at all the Renault Masters, Vauxhall Movanos, and Nissan Interstars, They are all RED! Changing the bulbs on these, you have a yellow bulb. Put it on, Yellow! Take a chance, You can always open them up and use a dremel to grind the plaastic so that its thinner, therefore making the yellow more 'yellower' , but thats just more trouble than its worth...
Look at the pic, NOT my van, Im a white van man, They do look slightly lighterr, But a yellow bulb you may just get away with it!
