So I was going to start with the PCV but after removing it and realising just how filthy the engine was I couldn't leave it so I started by cleaning the engine up a bit.
20210914_134233 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210914_135926 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then dealt with the PCV 20210914_140428 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I soaked the inside with degreaser and a whole load of black oily filth came out, I did this until it was running out clear then fitted the new O-ring. 20210914_141219 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then removed the throttle body to find the inlet manifold was very filthy internally and the throttle body itself. 20210914_142029 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210914_142034 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210914_142048 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210914_142102 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210914_142055 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then took to the inlet manifold off, cleaned it out and cleaned up the scruffy looking and oily cylinder head and the parts of the block I couldn't reach with the manifold on. I cleaned the mating faces up ready for the new gaskets but I forgot to photograph that. 20210915_133921 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_134850 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_134859 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_134859 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_134913 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_141252 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_142258 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_142304 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_173318 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_174407 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_175450 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210915_180811 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then cleaned out the idle control valve but didn't take any photos as there isn't much to see. I then took the thermostat housing off, the thermostat is stuck inside the housing (as per usual) but the thermostat is dated December 1991 so I belive it is the original 30 year old one. 20210915_180111 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE Last edited by 360beast; Sep 15th, 2021 at 22:06. |

Amazing work as always. I've had dirtier dinner plates than that cleaned up intake manifold.
Look out soon for Luke's expert diagnosis of a known issue with one of the ancillaries that came with the engine

I removed the very filthy rocker cover to change the rocker cover gasket and spent ages giving the rocker cover a thorough clean and removing the oxidation from the Volvo lettering. I fitted a new gasket obviously but forgot to get a photo of it.
20210916_124238 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I forgot to get a before picture of the top but you can make out in some previous photos how filthy it was. 20210916_124251 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then took the distributor off 20210916_124646 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210916_124655 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE The rotor arm has been sanded quite a bit! 20210916_124920 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE Oil seal and fibre washers are way past their best so I'll have to get an oil seal for it, I've got the fibre washers in stock. 20210916_124924 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE Clean rocker cover back on, it isn't as clean as I'd like but I used nearly a whole can of carb cleaner on it as it was rather stubborn so needed something stronger than degreaser. 20210916_134440 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I took the belts off to replace those and the front oil seals and crank cover gasket. 20210916_141629 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE Cleaned up and new cam seal in 20210916_143639 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then came across a problem I've never had on a redblock before... the cambelt sprocket on the end of the crankshaft is stuck solid, I've sorted out a small hub puller for it but I've soaked it periodically in WD40 for the last couple of days. I'll have to have a go at getting it off on Monday. 20210916_141633 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE Last edited by 360beast; Sep 17th, 2021 at 20:58. |

Looking great Luke, really appreciate the massive attention to detail you're applying to my car. Could eat my dinner off some of those parts.
I mean - just look at it! WhatsApp Image 2021-09-22 at 15.02.30.jpg

You'd have to clean it again! Nice offer on the dead bits from your old engine too! (in the other thread about the timing belt that failed)
