I've got a 2008 model year XC70 D5 Geartronic and average 34-35 MPG, however I do drive quite gently and live in a rural area. I don't think it's too bad for a heavy automatic with AWD.

My thoughts exactly. However my D5 Geartronic XC70 is showing 38.7 mpg MPG the 'pooter (which has never been reset since new). Car now has 11.5k miles on. I also find if I measure brim-to-brim, and work the MPG out manually, that I am getting a bit more MPG that the 'pooter says (about 2mpg better). So I am actually getting ~40mpg overall. Quite happy with that, and I expect it to go up more as the car loosens, and maybe after the 1st service with a new air filter...
Would expect 5-10% more with a manual...

I am writing in the wrong section as I have got the 2006 - old - V70.
It is a D5 AWD geartronic with 185 HP. It is listed with 219 g/100 KM officially. The new D5 AWD Geartronic with the biturbo and 205 HP comes in at 169 g/100 KM.
So there should have been a massive improvement in engine development.
However in town I get 31 MPG now and at 90 MpH around 37 - 41 MPG.
This does not sound much worse than the figures for the newer and better one though.

Has anyone got the new 175hp 2.4D with geartronic, I'm thinking about getting one and wondering if the consumption has improved over the 163hp model.

I know the XC70 is a little bigger and its a Geartronic, but I'd expect a V70 AWD Manual to be getting low to mid 30's.

The new shaped V70 / XC70 with the 185bhp engine is very poor on MPG. I'd expect that all new models to have a better MPG than the out going model, but Volvo slipped up big time on this one IMHO. In fact I'm really starting to think that the old shaped V70 / XC70 were a better car in many ways compared to the new V70 / XC70.

Well I picked up my new 205bhp 2010MY XC70 on Monday evening. I've only done 150miles in her but the computer is show 34.5mpg, so it seem better but only time will tell.

Also, what have they done with the seats in the 2010MY XC70, they aren't the big armchair like seats as in my old one.

Didn't think you like it enough to get another one Chaddie!!!

How brutal was the trade in price - you can PM if you like - and sorry for the personal question - I'm not having much luck with getting a decent price on mine

Doing very careful driving.

See below for average consumption (163hp D5 euroIII, calculated, the Volvo-computer shows about 5% worse numbers, click for details in liters per 100km per fill-up).

I'm not at all impressed, seeing as I try my best to be fuel efficient.

Question: will a sealed skidplate help?

Once found an article on the net explaining where the total drag on a car comes from. It was said there the drag of the enginebay was about 30%, the same as the frontal drag!!!!!

So putting a sealed skidplate (like the original Volvo aluminum one) could possibly improve the mpg noticeably??? Thoughts on this?

Would have reported myself, but lost the bidding on one on Ebay a few months back, and when checking with the dealer, it turned out it wouldn't have fit due to the AWD... Then again, how hard would it be to adopt it (provided it its just a little problem near the drive-axle going to the back). It's just aluminium

I'm off to test drive (and the possibly trade in the V70 D5 against) an M5 tonight - official mixed mpg of 19.8
