Forget servicing if you are going to keep long term you should consider rust prevention, my dads 4 year old V90 in certain areas underneath, once the plastic trays were removed were showing signs of corrosion. Wouldn’t stand a ten year year untreated test at all!

Buy a pressure washer attachment that washes underneath your car and use it regularly during the winter months. £50 on Amazon well spent!

already have a foam lance on wheels that i push under the car with decent snow foam. which i do on our V90. Sure it gets rid of road salt and grime, regardless of this i will be under sealing ours in the next 6 months.

I’m not sure under-sealing is necessary - a lot of the suspension components are aluminium, and the rest is covered with plastic panels. The few exposed steel sections of sub-frame have developed some surface rust on my almost 5 year old XC60, but it’ll be many years before this presents a problem.

That is my point though, prevention is better than cure on those exposed sections and where those plastic panels are, trap road salt etc, my best mate works at a Volvo indy, and is shocked at some of levels of corrosion on the even some of the later Volvo's.

I want to keep my V90, would be nice for it to see 28 years service like my 850 (yes unlikely i know) but can love in hope!

I am hoping I can keep mine for 20+ years also.

Planning to spray Lanoguard over the underside suspension components this summer.

Had a Ford Galaxy that lasted 20 years but eventually the interior was falling apart and rust was rampant. Am hoping the Volvos last better - running my own experiment as have both Mk2 XC60 and MK1 XC90 - I am expecting the XC90 to last better than the 60. XC90 is about to reach its first decade and the interior and exterior are perfect having done 150,000 and it just feels more robust than the 60 albeit a little more basic. I do love the XC60's interior which is why I bought it so hoping between the two we have everything we need for the foreseeable.

It is the stuff you don't anticipate which will catch you out. I was of a similar thought to you and had the Autobox fluid changed at 6 years old to help to prevent a future bill, then 6 weeks later the engine failed and gave me an 11k bill......
