I still have one in the scrap metal pile....
See the part that the strut bolts through the middle of is a rubber isolator

Yes, but see the metal in that picture that's gone rusty? That's the strut mount, the rubber is the bearing.
Am I correct in thinking you can reuse the strut mount (metal) and just replace the bearing? Its the bearing that rotates and does all the work.

You can get a repair kit - this is the one I got from Autodoc - about £36 per side.

Thanks. I’ll check that website.
Local part stores want nearly the same price just for the bearing!

Autodoc is good for parts and the prices are competitive.
They also have plenty of 'How to' videos on YouTube Since Brexit though, the parts take longer to arrive... |

I'll have a look on their site. If it takes too long for things to arrive, I may have to try local stores. I know it'll likely work out more expensive, but I can't be waiting too long for stuff to come either!

From my experience of strut bearings seizing on other cars, my offering is the the sound is often not just a clunk but also a "boing" when the spring winds up due to the bearing not turning and then the spring overcomes the stop and unwinds either in its mount or by freeing the bearing. The gong-like sound of the spring reverberating can be quite distinctive.

So you have 3 bolts that attach the top mount to strut tower of the car right? There is a circular piece of rubber that attaches to that top plate, the inside the circular piece of rubber is basically a metal washer and the bolt from the shock absorber goes through that metal washer and then a nut goes on top. So the shock absorber is not connected to top plate, it is connected to a suspended isolator inside the top mount. The bearing then goes over the top of the circular part of the top mount and allows the spring assembly to rotate

I’ve been getting some worrying clunks from under my 2001 s60 t5 so took to a garage and they told me I need a new steering rack, does anyone have any advice on the best place to purchase one please because I’m really struggling! All help much appreciated thanks.

Is this garage one you trust? Are they sure its not a suspension item that's worn causing a clunking noise, like lower control arms, drop links or sway bar bushings? I'm not saying its a wrong diagnosis, but you want to be 100% sure that its a steering rack issue because they aren't cheap to buy.
