"My dear Boswell, there are few problems in life that cannot be solved by the judicisous application of a 4lb lump hammer!"

Boswell's "Memoires of a tour of Streatham with my friend, Dr Johnson"

Well, I fixed the bonnet problem - a few swift taps with a chisel on the spring bolt popped the bonnet - then I removed the spring from the hinge and gave the hinge a good lamping back into shape - WD40D and oiled the hinges till very loose. However, when I removed the slam plate to re align the bonnet the top bolt sheered which seized the catch mechanisim completely. - I've lashed down the bonnet with coat hanger wire and I keep the speed around the 60mph mark. Any ideas where I can get a slam plate from - I was thinking I might as well put in a new one.

When the nut was sheared off the remaining bit of bolt will have tightened the mechanism so it will not move. Removing the catch and then the broken bolt should repair it. Will sort this when you come down next week. Have a spare available anyway in case.

Hi folks! I seem to remember that the bolt that you mention has a nut as well.I think you have to undo the nut first as the bolt is in a threaded hole to allow adjustment and then is locked from moving using the nut.

cheers folks

Mike - I think we will need a new panel - the mechanisim looks like it has been in a rock pool for the last 10 years it is so badly corroded I'll lash the bonnet for my drive to you and we can fix it on the day

cheers
