Easy way to tell them apart is that the face lift with the D1S have projector headlights and the older D2R have the reflector ones. I’ve had both and the projector ones do give a better light than the reflector ones but they are better than the halogen.

Just replaced my Xenons ( D1S) in the xc70.... the originals were philips - replaced with standard osram xenarc ones ( both 4300k ) and..
OMG - literally like night & day. The originals were still going OK-ish but after 9 years were obviuosly waining in intensity, so if you havent replaced them in your car yet ..think about it!!
