On the way out in poor traffic it did 41mpg, on the way back in better traffic it did 44.

I was very impressed with that.
Indeed, very impressive. With my V90 Cross Country I usually get a bit worse. I have never achieved better than 37-38 MPG.

51.1 mpg over 50 miles today in the XC90. Lowish average speed, but for a massive 7 seat petrol with only 2k on the clock, four people on board and a boot rammed full of luggage I think that's fantastic. I think you could only justify the diesel if you were towing.

I don’t want to spoil your fun, but that must have been a very long donwhill. I have never achieved to go over 40 MPG with my B5p V90 CC which is lighter and more aerodynamic.

I get over 40 quite often. We got 41.x from Geneva to Hasliberg and 41.x again from Hasliberg to Tremezzo. Just driving relaxed and smooth - sometimes setting the cruise at 115km/h instead of 120. Car is on 19" wheels with Continental Ecocontact tyres.

Best I've seen on our XC60 B5P is 43mpg - generally high 30's to 41mpg is the norm on a run, depends if I'm driving or the wife - she has a heavy throttle pedal foot!

It is indeed a very impressive mpg for a big car with a 2l petrol engine, but I don't think you can really say that the diesel version is only really justified if one is towing.
In the diesel, the average speed would probably have been some 15 mph higher for that trip consumption and the long term consumption average would be at least 10 mpg higher.

Last month I did a 1,700 mile return trip from Yorkshire to the Alps, not far from Geneva. I averaged 46.4 mpg on mostly motorways and autoroutes but it included some very steep mountain roads for 10 days around where I was staying.

If you were to drive the diesel in the same conditions in all likely hood it would show higher mpg as by their very nature they are more efficient especially for a smooth run, still good going over that distance as the hybrid battery is not exactly massive so over and hour there would have been decent petrol usage.

Consumption is one of those things that is specific to the driver and journeys done, this was clearly an ideal one for the car.

Looking on with envy. My 22 V90cc gets 32 - 35 mpg on my commute of 30 miles, 20 motorway at 70 and 10 town at average 20mph.
