Again thanks for the helpful responses. I hope it is something simple like a coil pack.

So the "O2" sensor is the Lambda sensor ......I remember spending £hundreds replacing those on my old 850 before finding out it was a duff ECU. Do the engine/ABS ECUs still fail as they used to?

I don't know if it is smoking, and he doesn't do enough miles to check mpg (unless the trip meter shows it) as he just potters to shops and back. Actually I hope that isn't a contributory factor, the longest run the car does is once a week over ours, about 20 miles return, other than that it's the CO-OP and round his mother's as his bad back means he can't walk far.

An update for anyone with similar issues; a helpful member read the codes last night, thanks Chris, faults stored would indicate a faulty coil pack on one cylinder, or the cam sensor. However clearing the codes must have reset something as the car has since run sweet as a nut, though presumably this is only temporary. At least we have some concrete suspects when problems reoccur.

As you know which cylinder is fitted with a duff coil pack swap it with one of the other ones then see if the fault migrates (read the codes again after driving it for a week or two), if the fault migrates to the cylinder you put the duff coil pack in to replace it with a new one - Mike
