Amen to that, servicing the oil and the cooler is the best thing you can do to preserve the life of your box!!! Even just an oil change and you will notice the difference.

Hi Gary,

Is that something you've developed yourself? I believe Volvo have an aux cooler kit for auto cars which do frequent towing, but I'd bet that costs a small fortune.

Hi Pyaap, no not really as to speak, I know the kits from Volvo are over £150 inc fittings, I have managed to source a cooler from a XC90, all i have to do now is make up a fitting kit, another job in the pipeline lol,

Gary.

With the 6 spd auto Volvo is able to allow more torque through the box. The older box ECU map has a torque restriction and an 'overboost' restriction - unlike the manual version of the ECU which gives both a bhp and torque overboost.

The 5 cylinder has a better heritage than the auto box - hence why its been in there for so long. I would be careful on re-mapping and focus more on throttle response and getting the turbo spun up quicker - 1750kg is a lot of car to get moving.

Understand the R has a bigger turbo, fitting a smaller and more responsive turbo with an ECU re-map would be an alternatve option.

I have an 850r auto an know where your coming from on the worried front.

My worry came from a few other owners experiences, they had had gearboxes go and it had cost over £1000 to sort.

however, i decided to fit a transmission cooler (long before anyone elese did ) and started to change the fluid every other oil change. ive now relaxed that a bit. my current fluid has about 20K on it and is still cherry red. I will over the next few weeks be doing another flush with 15l of dex 3.

My box has now done 178,000 miles and the fluid is still like new. The secret i think is to keep it as cool as you can and change it often.

My car isnt std as im running an swauto's remap.

FYI - i have 3x 13 row coolers for my tranny cooler, and 1 for my engine oil.

Default Interesting

Interesting. Where physically do you locate the cooler, out front by the radiator?

I can understand Volvo not wanting to do this cost reasons, but its a shame they didn't.

Default T5R Auto Box

Hi all, just thought i'd chuck my 2 pence worth in.....

I have a 96 T5R running MTE software and a Hybrid Turbo (for those who don't know) I have to be Honest and say I havn't touched my Autobox (including oil) since I have owned the car (over 3 yrs now). I know I'm asking for trouble by not changing the oil etc, but funds are alittle low at the moment.

Just thought i'd let you know, the auto box can stand up to some real abuse (by me).

Bobcat how easy is it to flush change the oil ones self?

Regards

Iain
