The high cost is because the intercooler part is so expensive I rekon. Its a shame no one makes a copy part. (No one that I could find anyway and I looked for ages )

I just hope it solves the problem. I have asked the dealer to check the headlight alignment as well because its really hard to see at night!

Will post results later! It should be done today!

Well its back from the dealers with a spangly new intercooler, and what a difference!

The car has now got its smile factor back. A small press of the loud pedal puts a big grin on the face!!

Its staggering the difference its made, the performance must have been dropping over a long period, so I hadnt really noticed.

There are some photos of the old one (which I asked to keep.....) below. If i'm right the dark oilly patches must be the leaky bits, so it must have been really leaking a lot

Costs were as follows:-

Replaced split intercooler £185.99 Labour and £192 parts plus VAT. (Main dealer prices, see below)

I also had the headlamps aligned so can now see in the dark again

It is a lot of money, but money well spent, the car even seems to run smoother and sound better although this might be my imagination! It also looks like the smoke problem is cured, there was a tiny bit on the way home but its a very cold night and it probably needs a good thrashing to clear out the rest of the pipework, but its certainly a million percent better than it was!!

I will post this elsewhere, but the work was carried out by Lipscomb Volvo in Aylesford, Kent and they were brilliant. They had all the small touches just right, I was made a coffee when I dropped the car off, I was offered a lift to work, the work was carried out in the time period they said and the car is absolutley gleaming having been washed inside and out.

All in all I would recommend them.

Photos here:- Comments welcome!

Cheers

I`m very surprised at how big this is. The last time I was working around an intercooler was on an Escort RS Turbo that was about 1/4 the size of that! Is the intercooler easy to check out for splits etc while still on the car? Could you see the sooty deposits while it was still in situ or were they only spotted when off the car?

Cheers

I couldnt see it at all when it was on the car, which is part of the reason it took me so long to convince myself to change it (due to the high cost!!)

The signs on my car was lots of gunky stuff visible when looking underneath in the gap through the front engine cover, lots of smoke whilst driving, and a loss of fuel economy.

Others have reported strange hissing noises, oil on the undertray / front valance,

HTH
