On my volvo 240GLT automatic I have michelin energy savers. They are fine with no snow but find them quite poor in snow/ice covered back lanes in Staffordshire. A slight incline and even letting the autobox creep forward the rear wheels start to spin even with gentle acceleration. Its the setting off grip that they lack due to the tread pattern.

I find the michelin worse in snow than a set of budget tyres, even then after a year with those the next winter the grip was worse in the snow, but I could still get up hills much steeper than with the newish Michelin tyres.

I just take it easy and avoid hilly bits.

At last someone who has the same opinion as I do. Those tyre tests you get every so often are really only useable to the car pictured... And I see it the same! Different car but same tyre: different handling.

I agree too, very good point.

My Saab loved pirellis good comfort and lovely car control, whereas both my S60s had them as factory fit and hated them - they tramlined like crazy on the S60s.

Never snowed much while I had them though so can't comment on that aspect.

Yeah. My mum's S80 gets on well with Contis, but my C30 doesn't. The Transit gets on well with Michelins. The S80 doesn't. My old 960 got on well on Vredestein. The C30 doesn't.

I would say that I have had Pirelli on an Espace, a Scenic and now a Volvo.

On the Volvo summer use is great. On the Renaults summer use was average, not that good tbh, and winter use was average, although better than the XC AWD running summer P Zeros in the conditions.

I have really gone off Pirelli. I simply do not trust them ,although have Sottozero winters on the S60, and they are ok in the cold conditions so far. (not driven it but been told). Got them because they were cheap, well cheap for the size and the brand..!!..and from a dealer. It was easy.

Regards

Vredestein all day long, Ultrac or Sessanta's most of the time, Wintrac in winter. I've had them on a Volvo, a VW Passat and BMW X5, and never been disappointed.

when i bought my xc90 in 2010 it was fitted with pirelli scorpions and when we had that heavy snowfall in december that year I was at a reunion in wales , driving home the traction was superb and I had no hairy moments, even though they were down to 4mm, I replaced them with kumho's last year and the first thing I noticed was slightly less road noise, but Ive had no chance to try them in the snow yet.

I bought my car with these on and replaced with the same,

And to be honest, they've been great,on the road, camping field's and on the snow.

Each too their own i say.

My view...

Continental are my favourite...the SportContact 5 is an awesome tyre and their winter tyres are very good as well.

That is just a personal preference though based on my experience, looking more objectively I would say Goodyear and Michelin are just as good for sports tyres and in fact I'm running Goodyear winters at the moment and they are great. So I'd group Continental, Goodyear and Michelin together at the top of my confidence level.

Pirelli I have become massively disillusioned with recently. The P6000 was never a great tyre in the first place but it served the 850/V70 generation OK and wasn't bad as such but there were just so many better tyres out there. The old P Zero (not the Rosso) was again a very good performance tyre in its day but like the P6000 it has been with us a long time now and the offerings from the aforementioned makes are much more up to date.

As for the P Zero Rosso...don't get me started...I fail to see the point in it as a tyre; it claims to be a 'performance' tyre but as others have mentioned it seems to be more of a a mediocre one that has some of the negative attributes often associated with performance tyres like being hard riding and noisy without actually delivering performance. For summer performance tyres Pirelli are going to have to seriously up their game if I'm ever going to buy them again.

In my mind Michelin are the best brand of tyre out there.
