Thanks for the reply's,

The temp never got up as far as the 3 oclock position in the 18 mins it took to drive to work. Somewhere between 4 -5 was the highest it got.

I put £30 worth of fuel in today and it doesnt seem to of dropped but I will check tomorrow afternoon. I reset the MPG and now it states 27.5mpg.

I am hoping that it was someone syphoning the fuel though. At least that would be easier to fix. !!!!!

If I can find a double bed sheet tomorrow then I will park the car on it and see if there are any leaks.

Thanks again for the reply's.

I've owned my Volvo for approx 2mths and I'm getting around 20mpg around town and last w/end, round trip to Pewsey returned a heady 43mpg!
I've come to the conclusion that theres a price to pay for the sumputousness of these cars. I've been a white van man for the last 15yrs! and now feel that I'm driving around on my comfy sofa....it's luverly and worth the money!

Hi,

almost certainly your thermostat has failed. Very common fault on the 850's and easy / cheap to fix. 30 mins tops and about £10. If you do a search on these fora for thermostat you will find step by step notes on how to change it.

I would suggest you do this asap as the engine is running cold and therefore rich which isn't doing it any good at all. This alone should see your fuel consumption figures improve dramatically.

Cheers

I've a recently acquired 1995 850 2.5se manual estate 80k on the clock. Seems to be giving 29mpg on a mix between 150 mile runs on motorway/b roads and city driving.
