I swopped an s80 for my xc last summer, and the s80 never picked up any tar, whereas the xc always has some flecks on the two front doors each week when i wash it

Hv read that this year road salt was sprayed with molasses to help it 'stick' to the road surface and think its that which we are seeing. Its not just XC90's my wife has a new Citroen DS3 with big wheels and it is covered - interestingly wont come off with Tardis either which adds weight to my theory its mollases residue which we are seeing which of course Tardis wont touch - could also be reason we havent seen it in prev years as molasses is new this yr. When weather improves I intend to buy a 'clay' kit to remove this surface contaminent.
