if the bulbs are removed would the display stay totally black? That may be the solution until I get the DIM fixed.

I gather the MOT rules changed recently in respect of SRS / airbag lights. In gerneral if it works as expected its a pass, if it stays on - fail, if it isn't present (i.e. no bulb) it is a pass - a bit odd but this is now driven by EU directives apparently - quite a lot of discussions on the net about it.

Obviously the way round it is to fix the route cause

I thought they checked that the light comes on temporarily when the ignition is switched on to ensure that the bulb hasn't just been removed.

I thought that too but it seems under the new rules that is not the case - may be wrong though

Not a failure if the bulbs are removed or disabled! As a result, the airbag system cannot be tested therefore you get an "advisory" to that effect not a failure (if the tester knows the rules!).

Had I discovered this earlier I might have saved a £800 bill for an S-Max airbag MOT test failure.

Would you have minded paying £800 if having a fully working airbag then went on to save you or your loved one from serious injury or death?

Not that many years ago it was suggested that airbags would only have a working life of 10 years before needing replacement which would probably make many of our vehicles uneconomical to keep on the road. Fortunately, a lot of accident data gathered (much of it from Volvo) has shown that airbags are probably good for at least double that amount of time.

Airbags are about the only component in a car that you can't functionally test yourself so if the cars diagnostic system is indicating a fault it's probably worth getting it fixed professionally.
