That's gotta be the Volvo sledge (a snip at £178!) see the Volvo magazine 'LIV'for details.

Cool

If I was In the market for one of those I'd get an 850/S70/V70 TDi,
They've got the 140 bhp Audi 5 cylinder engine which should manage over 40 mpg on a run - and you could get a cheap ecu upgrade like Upsolute to take it to just over 170 bhp for £300

Might be hard to find a saloon though if thats what your after

My 245 GLT has just completed its second year for me and has now covered about 75,000 miles. My fuel costs are £8/100 mile on lpg. This year repairs have cost me well under £1000 including a set of tyres (1 set a year) but have involved me in about 3-4 days work. Excluding road tax, insurance and MOT I reckon about 10-11p/mile + my time.
Its cheap reliable but not posh Volvo motoring and more suited to some one who is capable of getting dirty hands but saying that I have customers who regard their 240s as cheap motoring.

The 66 is/was basically just a badge-engineered Daf 66 from the '70s....A tiny 2-door saloon/estate with a CVT transmission using rubber bands, giving one forward gear, and one reverse (capable of going as fast backwards as it does forwards )....Fitted with a Volvo grille and trademark '70s Volvo sticky-out bumpers! , Although never, to my knowledge, sold in turbodiesel form!

Suppose You can pick one up for a few hundred quid, and they must be capable of somewhere between 40-50 mpg, if You don't make use of the immense performance (???)....Making it a pretty economical Volvo to run

Serious answer to Your question must be an S/V40 Turbodiesel? I run a petrol engined S40, and certainly compared to recent Alfa Romeos, I find it a very cheap, economical, comfy, refined, and generally EASY car to own....Imagine the diesels would be the same, but with more economy

Thanks folks, this has been illuminating lol.

i'll give the 66 a miss if it's ok with you :P

I already have an S40, so don't really fancy an estate version as well, therefore probably will keep my eyes open for an 850 or S/V70 TD at a good price.

Good choice....The 850 is a lovely car....For further enlightenment, You should try reading Meta Volante's thread "850, let's start a discussion" if You haven't already!

Serious answer to the question? Assuming you're not doing short distances in urban conditions, a 360 GL/GLE (carb). Having said that, you simply can't beat a diesel (pound for pound) for urban use, or from cold. On a run, the gap closes.

My 360 would do 45mpg at 70mph on the motorway (my record was 52mpg over 350 miles, but I was doing 60 most of the way), and you can pick a clean one up for less than £100 with tax and test. Avoid ones with a sunroof unless it's known good, as they're normally broken and noisy. When the year's up, if it won't pass, put it on eBay for a quid. It's a B200, so it simply won't go wrong...ever. A 340 1.4 is probably cheaper, but they do need looking after.

You're looking at £100 for the years motoring, plus insurance, plus fuel @ 45+ mpg on a run, or worst case, 20-25 on short urban journeys. 30-40 cross-country. I honestly don't think it gets much cheaper than that unless you're doing huge mileages, in which case a 440 TD is probably cheaper.

cheers

James
