I would slightly lift the front of the car, put it on low stands with front tyres still touching the ground, undo the oil sump plug, remove the oil filter and let the old oil drip out all day, using a cloth I would soak up any old oil left in the oil filter compartment AND yet I could never put in more than 5 liters of oil, anymore and oil level would rise above the upper mark of the dipstick...

All done, it was easy, except for the air filter, oem Volvo. it was about 3mm too long and try as I might I couldn't get it on. So I had to trim a bit off the rubber seal.
just the fuel filter to do next. |

When changing the fuel filter on a common rail diesel you should be *extremely* careful not to let any particles of anything get in the filter housing or any of the other parts.
The piezo injectors will not like any bits being thrown at them.

I had a look at mine today and it looks like I can get to the oil filter without removing the fuel filter, is that right? |

Hi
I am sure you can unbolt the fuel filter mount and filter but leave the pipes connected and lift it out of the way enough to help. Iain |

yes you do not need to remove the fuel filter carrier to get the oil filter out ...
