as has been said, you've missed the permission box, or more likely dismissed it with an inadvertent no without realising at some point when you connected the first time.

Despite me being happy with how to do such things my dealer insisted on showing me how to connect the bluetooth etc... However I declined the 'use contacts on phone' option as I wanted to thin out my contacts and tidy them up before doing so in the car, so I clicked no at this stage... went on to make a call etc. and then when i wanted to use contacts I had blank screen like you..

I had to delete the connection, forget the connection, then start a new search and watch both screens at once whilst redoing the BT. you should then see the box asking for permission on your phone to use/share contacts . select yes/ok obviously and from then on every time it connects it will auto store the contacts and calls made.

If you don't delete/forget the connection from your devices it will remember the last configuration so if you have inadvertently clicked 'no' it wont let you have access, start afresh and you should see the option

at leats i did anyway

I'd agree with NOCTURNAL - there should be a pop-up on your phone asking you whether you want to allow your car to access your contacts list on your phone.

Delete the pairing, forget the connection on your phone and re-pair, and then look on your phone for a pop-up asking for authorisation to access your contacts list. You may also get a pop-up on your car's nav display asking whether a randonly generated pin code is correct - just answer OK/Yes to that.
