It's not sufficient just to have your phone linked for normal voice connections. You need to specifically enable Bluetooth data sharing in the car and on your phone for it to work.

Bluetooth tethering is plenty fast enough for Spotify, Traffic, etc.
Cheers Lexman, that sounds good, I'll give it a go in the morning

If for whatever reason you can't connect you data share by the Bluetooth method there is another way to do WiFi hotspot without the hassle of switching it on/off manually. In my previous car I used an app called Hotspot Automatic (on Android). You set the app to switch on the mobile hotspot when it detects the car Bluetooth on and then when you switched the car off it switches the hotspot off. A good solution but uses more phone battery if you aren't charging than the direct Bluetooth method. Lexman8's solution much neater if you can do that.

Thank you, that sounds a good solution, I am on android (Samsung s10) so will try this if bluetooth proves too slow.

Oh well let's see how it goes
This lack of a SIM card/holder came as a surprise to me too, Not all models/specs are fitted with them, contrary to what the Volvo manuals suggest. You need to connect your mobile via Bluetooth (with Wi-fi turned off) and yes it is a pain in the a--- but when you forget you soon realise once in the car.

PS - There is no facility to add a SIM card holder as a dealer fitted option either. Poor.

It's not necessary to turn off wi-fi on your phone.
