There is nothing inside the car where you indicate the sound is coming from to make the noise and clearly it can't be the rear wheel bearing.

The fuel pump is located underneath the car moreorless under the back of the front passenger seat.

My money is on the gear box (the M47 can get a bit noisy with age!) and shift mounts/ drive bearing/s or maybe something to do with the n/s front wheel (jack it up and spin the wheel for starters).

Other than that get the stereo sorted!

Bob
Cheers Bob. The humming noise does sound like it’s coming from the fuel pump area. I’ll check that over the next few days.

The second noise potentially could be gearbox, drive train is it sounds louder under load. Sat at the lights and put the auto box into neutral and everything quietens down. The gear box oil was changed by the previous owner, but like you say it’s just getting old.

Hmmmm - have you checked the gearbox ATF level and colour Chris? Should be checked with the engine hot and idlng, withdraw the gearbox dipstick, wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth/tissue and reinsert it , remove it as soon as it gets to the fully in position and check the level.

If it's under or overfilled, it could cause cavitation in the torque converter and/or hydraulic pimp in the box, both will sound like a hummy-squelching noise, perhaps with a whirring noise mixed in if the one-way clutch isn't doing what it should.

I had overlooked the fact you had an auto box!! Now they can make some strange noises at times!! I wonder if the previous owner changed the auto oil properly and with the correct fluid and why did he consider necessary to change it in the first place!

Best of luck,

Bob

Cheers Dave. Any particular colour it should be?

No idea Bob. The previous owner had some general maintenance done, but perhaps they wanted to give the box a refresh?

Should be a nice cherry red Chris, a bit like cherryade. Use some plain white toilet or kitchen roll and dribble the ATF from the dipstick onto it. Should be a nice pinky-red. If it's brown, black or smells burned (normally has quite a nice oily smell but different to engine oil) then it sounds like it needs changing. I'd advise on part-changes but can give you more information if it looks like that's the route you need to go down.

I wonder what ATF the place that "changed" the fluid used?

Had a look today and the ATF looks cherry red and looks clean. The only thing I could notice is that the level is a little high.

I did have a listen to the fuel pump and it’s really loud so will get it changed soon

Hello Challo,
Bit odd but I think I have recently bought this car 😂 2.3 auto gle in silver/blue? 1990
Been having some problems with the power steering and the Speedo. Did you have these problems/try anything to fix either of these? Took it to two Volvo specialists in Hampshire and neither was interested.
Cheers

Hi Mate,

Hmmmm I sold the car to guy called Ethan in Essex in November, and looks like he lowered it and then sold it again. I spotted it on FB but disappeared again quickly. Do you mind me asking what you paid for it?

The speedo never worked for me. I took it apart as often the plastic cogs in the speedo break but mine was ok. The other fix I believe is to remove the resistors and resolder. Few guides on the internet I think, but I just used an app on my phone to judge the speed. It’s not been broken for long though so mileage is pretty much correct.

The power steering was fine for me, but first drive in the morning it was a struggle to turn the steering right. After the first few turns it was ok and felt fine. I was advised the steering column in the engine bay becomes stiff. There is a U joint which needs to be greased and that eases it off. If you look on the left hand side of the block you can see what I mean.

If you read this thread you should see a lot of the fixes mentioned and work that has been done. Any questions drop me a PM

Thanks mate. Tried to send you a message but my post count isn't high enough.
It is the right car. I bought it off Ethan. He did lower it, but he's cut the springs. He told me that you did it, so that's nice of him. I'm thinking about getting lowering springs for it soonish. It's really low at the moment and doesn't go over speedbumps very well so hopefully I can lift it up by 20mm or so and it'll ride nicely.
I'm currently doing the same with the speedo. Driving with waze open. It'll be a shame for it to not have a working speedo/odo.
Power steering is the same. Just after starting it's difficult to turn right but will turn left. I'll get under it at some point and lube it up as you said.
Perhaps you could message me your number/email and we could have a more in depth talk about it? This thread has proved really useful. It's nice to have some history behind the car.
Cheers
