A mate arrived in his S60 T5 and I turned off an SRS light that he had activated when he removed his CCM to repair the thermistor, I then turned off his DRLs with Vida and cleared a few codes that had been caused by an aftermarket radio which has now been resigned to the bin and the original radio refitted.

Then we removed my CCM on the V70 and fitted a new thermistor, odd that both cars have Halfords batteries and both cars thermistors were blown which makes us wonder if maybe they don't know the correct procedure for changing the battery on these cars, after that we cleared the SRS warning on my car caused by removing the CCM and we're good to go

Took a punt on engine carbon cleaning, been meaning to give it a try and found myself suddenly with enough spare readies to do so

140 quid for a home visit, injector clean, chemical clean and carbon clean

In all honesty still slightly sceptical as to whether it will improve economy which is the main purpose for me but still if it helps to prolong the life of the engine and keep emissions to a minimum that can't be a bad thing. Will see over the next couple of weeks mpg on the spreadsheet

Main thing is took it for a long run and he didn't cause any faults to come up

On the down side though on that long run Metallica personally are responsible for one blown rear door speaker so now I've got to replace that as well. They were a bit cheap I'm tempted by a whole new set of 4 tbh

update on speakers

previous (Nov '21): 4 x 4ohm 50w rms Vibe Slick6-v7

1 blew as mentioned above to be fair I did tinker with the EQ and may have overdone it with the mid range a little at high volume for a sustained duration, in my defence enter sandman is a tune

Arrived and being fitted today 4 x 4ohm 100w rms Kenwood KFC-PS1796

Not expecting more volume, just better handling of the power without splitting at the seams

Not today but a few weekends ago I popped by Lakes Autos in Wyboston as it was on the way to visiting family in Lincolnshire. Couldn't actually see anyone around but took some pictures.

They have quite a lot of stock. Even bigger piles of parts of cars round the back too.

Lakes Autos resembles an overgrown "60's gas station in the USA!

For what it is worth the OEM units have really wide responses which match the sound damped door cavities et al.............
Def Leppard almost purrs

I have been toying with the idea of fitting a base box in the inverted space saver wheel in the V70 - my C70 has the twined woofers behind the rear seats, which makes for really heavy base notes, Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" shakes the floor pan!

I went a bit more extreme and put twin 12"ers in a box across behind the back seat, which is a complete pain in the arse to take out and basically means I can't fold down the back seats and use it as a van

then again the kids seats being all strapped in makes that a nuisance anyway

there are many many rattly things in a v70 and I've found most of then lol at certain frequencies it almost seems like the whole dashboard is going to fall off

and that sensor in the ceiling pretty much always drops out with anything drum and bassy

Default HU-850 swap

I found a replacement HU-850 in a local scrapyard for £40. Same part number as my 'duff' unit - which was making no sound apart from the occasional popping noise. It's a bit of a fiddle to remove the HU and CCM panel on the post facelift (2005 Geartronic XC70) and tricky to get the unit out around the geartronic lever. I had to remove the trim around the gear lever, pop the trim panel out, undo the 2 torx bolts that hold the unit in - but with the battery connected so that I could move the gear lever back far enough to remove the whole unit. Once it was free, I disconnected the battery - waited 10 mins, then unplugged all the connections. Re-fitting was much easier. Radio and CD work fine as do the steering controls. All in all a very satisfying job.
