Do you regularly hit 4,500rpm ?

I read a document recently about how best to run in a diesel engine and how best to maintain it and reduce emissions.

Leave factory fill of oil for the first year or 10,000 miles.
For the first 1,000 miles do not exceed 3,000rpm, but make sure you reach 3,000rpm regularly.
For the next 1,000 miles (to 2,000 miles) do not exceed 3,500rpm, but make sure you reach 3,500rpm regularly.
For the next 1,000 miles (to 3,000 miles) do not exceed 4,000rpm, but make sure you reach 4,000rpm regularly.
For the next 1,000 miles (to 4,000 miles) do not exceed 4,500rpm, but make sure you reach 4,500rpm at least a couple of times a week.
After that, no limit, but make sure you continue to hit 4,500rpm through the gears several times a week. The benefit of this is it helps to self clean the injectors, it blows any accumulated soot out of the exhaust system and it helps to free off the piston rings, making the engine more efficient and less likely to use engine oil.

"I personally feel sorry for the dealerships. I bet that they have never had so much warranty work."

Ummm, you do know that dealers love doing warranty work ? Its guranteed money for work charged at full rates.

Within 8 months of ownership of a lovely S60 D5 I have had almost £1000 worth of work done.

I wouldn't want to be a Technician in a modern dealership. Probably a proper Engineer and now he/she has to plug in a laptop.

There was nothing wrong with the good old 900 series - it told you the faults.

Would I buy another Volvo - a modern one vs the newer ones - NO !
Some very useful "real world" comments here. I'm looking to change cars and my current list is used/approved Jag S, BMW 5 or S60. Soul says Jag, Logic says BMW and a little voice says S60. Hmmm.

Hi 2003bhoy,

Did you get your rear coolant hose done? If so, how much did it cost? Stratstone Burton have quoted about £600.

Did Volvo contribute to it? Any info would be very much appreciated.

Simon.

Dead thread. His last post was in May 07 so I guess he drove off in a puff of smoke

The guy in the parts dept told me that this is a common problem and it looks like the upper hose has already been replaced. I might chance my arm and see how much they will charge to fit it tomorrow, but I wont be holding my breath as they quoted me £340 for the 36k mile service.
when the D5 came out these hoses were Italian and poor quality , they burst , volvo had a campaign to replace them all with modified ones before they gave any more trouble , ( 740 turbos still run the original hoses ! )your car cant have been serviced properly or you would have had all 3 changed FOC by Volvo when in for a visit without asking . there may still be a policy on them but you will probably have to pay 50% if there is ...

It's got a full dealer service history, perhaps they were changed and now need changing again??

Thanks for the info, I will do a bit of further investigation.

Where did you hear that? You have definately been mis-informed. Warranty rates to dealers is normally half their normal retail and invariably not enough time is allocated to some jobs.
Back me up Clan.

I don't think dealers make anything on Warranty work ! You can complain if you disagree with the standard times though ...
