Placed an order with Classicswede.
Decided against a suspension arm kit for now. I'm not having major issues with the front suspension other than a clunk when steering left and sometimes steering left and braking. Steering feels a bit clunky. I'll see if my garage can do the job and then see what they say about existing bushes and clunk. Have bought droplinks x 2 and ball joints x2 as cheap. 2 damper covers/ bump stops. 2x damper inserts. If I get a chance I'll take the offside front wheel off soon and see if I can find any play. Also have a better look at the front springs. Many thanks. James |

Still my workhorse, and well used in my job. Thankfully lots of local work, so don't mind the fuel costs as around 2k a year. Not keen on vans due to the poor visibility. Like my 940 auto estate. See how it goes with Stratford Upon Avon as have a slight weep on the water pump Top gasket seal leaking after 6 years. Plan to buy genuine gasket set and SKF water pump for it. It would be nice to come and stretch it's legs! James. |

Updated post.
I replaced all the front suspension with classicswede suspension kit and new Droplinks TRW Ball joints and track rod ends. Enjoyed doing it. You can now feel what the wheels are doing on the road after 209,000 miles. Before wheel alignment, vibration in steering wheel was very, very bad. Still awaiting Classicswede ridex dampers but hope to hear from him. Still get a clunking noise on rough roads, seems from the front drivers side over uneven roads that are like corrugated, but could be from the huge leak from the passenger side suspension strut insert bottoming out? Can the suspension top mounts/ bearing cause a clunking noise? Plan to get an alignment done again, as not convinced Kwick Fit did a great job. Once inserts done, ready for MOT on the 2nd of November!! Many thanks. James. Last edited by volvo always; Sep 7th, 2023 at 21:33. |

Sounds like some good progress. Well done!
You can probably do a half decent job of adjusting the tracking yourself. In the past I’ve used piles of supermarket carrier bags in lieu of steering turntables. But since they started charging for carrier bags I’ve treated myself to a pair of turntables. You can probably get quite close by centring the rack and using string and/or a tape measure. Then tweak it to get it feeling right. If the steering wheel is offset right you need to shorten the nearside track rod and lengthen the offside one by equal amounts, e.g. half a turn at a time. To increase toe-in to improve straight line stability shorten the nearside track rod a bit more if the car is pulling to the left. |

I wouldn't adjust the tracking myself without the proper equipment at all, a small movement can make a big difference. I used to do my own when I had access to the equipment but I don't anymore so use a place that all the staff look like they've just come out of prison but they do a great job.
For the sake of £25 for a wheel alignment why risk scrubbing out your tyres and then having to pay £150 for a pair of tyres. |
