I am not surprised. I've been promoting the 740 for some time, and it is neither regarded as a classic nor particularly desirable. Even on this forum and in the wider VOC there is a great deal of antipathy towards the 700 series - cheap (read tatty) estates sell because they are cheap vans: saloons well, I've seen very nice ones sell for small change. The 740 is a well underrated car, but I've said all this before. Just that the wider community aren't getting the message. With regard to the price; well, I think you may very well own the car for some time - no malice intended. Jon. Last edited by CTCNetwork; Oct 1st, 2014 at 23:05. Reason: Unnecessary quote removed |

It wouldn't be my choice of car either Jon. However, each to there own, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I would very much like my dads car to go to an enthusiast who likes the car for what it is. What the car is worth, to be honest is immaterial, the price is always negotiable if the right buyer comes a long Last edited by CTCNetwork; Oct 1st, 2014 at 23:05. Resurrection of this old but not forgotten thread.
My fathers treasured 740 is still for sale (some may say at that price I'm not surprised!) Anyway it needs to go to a good home. Its just passed its MoT, and no advisory's I appreciate I'm not going to get what it is really worth, however I am now open to sensible offers in the region of £1250. If you are genuinely interested, then please pm, a genuine offer will be seriously considered. Thanks for reading Paul Last edited by Em740; Oct 1st, 2014 at 21:04. |

great looking car. i think you can get the price, just got to find the rare buyer who is in the market for such a car. Personally I think for the price looks like a bargain.
I would consider if I had space and the extra money! GLWTS! -Matt |

That looks absolutely amazing. Would have it for myself only three cars already. If i move any on I'll get back to you although at that price it shouldn't hang around too long. Best of luck with the sale.

What a lovely 740! I had a blue E-reg GL many years ago, my first Volvo, same interior as this white one! Is it a 2 litre or 2.3?
Pricing and selling this is tricky - as the OP has found! The 740GL is the least sought-after version of a model that has yet to find the sort of popularity that some 240 cars are now beginning to enjoy. GLE versions have leather, alloys, more electricals etc, and so are nearer to what a buyer expects from a car these days. This of course overlooks the essential strength of the model which is it's simplicity. Of course rear electric windows could be added, as could alloys and leather from a 9-series car, but to be spending in that way on this car, a buyer will probably want to pay only a low price. Also that red fuel cap suggests that the car really should be run on leaded petrol I think? In all seriousness, if you'd take £250 I'd buy the car today, and promise you that it'd see out it's days in pampered luxury and treated only to the odd Sunday run out! But more realistically I'd suggest you try advertising on the Car and Classic web site. 740s do sell on there, and it is free. The good folk on here already own cherished Volvos! As for price, who knows? Sadly in this day and age you'll be lucky to find anyone buying on sentiment, or willing to do you any favours. It is certainly worth a shot at £1250, but I fear that you'll struggle to top £1000. We're heading for winter now and out of the classic car show season, and prices drop. Yes, you can buy a ten year old Golf for around £2500 as has been said, but in the crazy old world of second hand cars, prices often don't make sense. Good luck with the sale - and don't forget that deep in the heart of sunny Yorkshire there's a nice warm garage just waiting to welcome £250-worth of beautiful white 740! Again, good luck with the sale. Cheers Jack Last edited by capt jack; Oct 4th, 2014 at 00:51. |

One kinda similar to this sold on ebay about a year ago for £1700! It was a 'barn find' 740 GL with the later 940 front end, in silver with about 36k miles.
This white one is more desirable though. |
