I've obviously had things wrong for many years, i always thought of the Catalan area as being around the borders of France and Spain, more to the east on the border with a little distance into both countries. Is that not right or sort of right but a bigger area than i thought?

It's partially right. You are right on the general location. There is no space in between. Catalonia is quite big. It faces the Mediterranean sea and borders south France. Then to the west is Aragon, then Navarre and the basque country. All of them have borders with France. And then there's Andorra in the Pyrenees, just sandwiched between Catalonia and France.
Catalonian culture is quite different from Spanish, they were conquered really late and they never accepted subjugation. Language is closer to Portuguese and french than it is to castellano. And the separatist movement/sentiment is quite strong.
