It's a Ford Kuga with a full face of makeup!!

40 grand for a car that couldn't outdrag a 2.0 Turbo Diesel Focus? no thanks

Plus you'll get one of these:

The Kuga / Freelander / XC60 / Evoque all have similar underpinnings surely, not surprising considering they all came out of the period of joint-ownership under Ford?

Interestingly the centre 'floating console' and roller shutter cover between the front seats are straight out of the XC60! You can see that there has been crossover between the design teams.

Everything I have seen says Kuga is a different platform, it's certainly not as big as XC60/Feelander?

Hate to break it to you guys, but it's XC60/Freelander/Mondeo under there, not Kuga/Focus. Only they have redesigned many of the steel Freelander suspension parts in aluminium to save weight and improve handling.

The boot volume is measured up to the load cover. With that letter box back window, the cover is quite high. In the real world the boot is more Golf/Focus size.

It's a great car, but more on competition with the X1 and new Q3. I believe Volvo are talking of a small SUV to complete the set also. All of these sell in volume with sub 200bhp 4 cylinder diesels. It's as quick as my D5, so can't feel that slow. There's always the 2 litre petrol that is shared with the XC60 and sourced from Mazda!

good to know. does that mean the xc60 could have a bigger boot to the roof? when i pack the car full i always do it with the cargo net and to the roof.

Evoque doesn't really do it for me, but I hope it's successful and tempts a few XC60 buyers. Starting to see more and more XC60's and preferred it when there were fewer of us about....

Well I predict I will see loads when I drop my son off at school in the next few years.

I'm don't know much about it but I'm sure it's a good car, don't like it much in the pics but will reserve judgement till I see it in the metal.

WRT space, my wife's CR-V has on paper a bigger boot yet her judgement on the XC60 having packed it for our trip to France is that the XC60 is noticeably bigger than hers for luggage.

Autocar are Tata's PR machine, so it's to be expected.

With all due respect I think it's equally likely that a brand like Range Rover has produced a good car. The styling and packaging may not work for you personally but that doesn't make a car bad.

Once upon a time in another life I wrote a few motorcycle reviews for a now defunct lifestyle magazine. At the time, Ducati ruled the roost in the reviews and there was lots of talk about bias in the magazines due to ad revenue etc. I spoke to some of the respected freelancers at the time and all categorically claimed any editorial pressure or even changes to their copy. And some of the magazines didn't even feature adverts for Ducati.

It's a claim I see repeated in many arenas to this day. It always seems to me it's easier for someone who dislikes something on subjective grounds, when confronted with a positive review, merely to claim bias than accept the fact that the review may have some basis in fact.

Some good points here.

Appreciate that the whole point of this Forum is that it allows people with a common interest to exchange views and opinions, but personally I'm not especially fussed if the competition is producing what appear (IMO) credible alternatives to the XC60.

Means I've got more choice as / when I look to change the car (and Volvo will have to up their game to convince me / us collectively not to look elsewhere presumably!)
