Consumption improves if I switch to manual instead of auto. On a motorway run with two adults I can get 43ish mpg providing I don't go much above 70mph. If I compare the figures to the Lexus IS220d i had, that returned 35 mpg in town and about 45mpg on a run at a steady mind numbing 56mpg. My previous 2.4 S80 returned a wallet thumping mid teens around town and a misrely 22/24mpg on a run.

Use of the cruise control improves the mpg in the D5 and also did in the Lexus.
I've just done a decent run today and got around 45mpg using cruise at 75mph.

Hi All
I have a 9 month old V70 D5 SE Sport manual with 30,000 miles (I had it from new), and I think it is poor on fuel. I average 31-33 mpg generally, thats around town and fast motorway. If I sit a 70mph it returns 39-40mph.
In this day and age, I would expect better, although I'm lucky as it is a company car and my company pay for the fuel
I've had Audi's and Saab's over the last few years (sorry to use german swear words!) and these had been great on fuel, well into 48mpg and upwards.
I also think the turbo is too big, causing too much lag and not enough mid range punch. It is very good at low revs, and not bad at high, but it needs a little more in mid range.
However, it is one of the best made cars around with excellent build quality and materials. The fans built into the seats are the best thing, especially in the summer.
All the best
Dave
