When you say "some muppet overfilled the auto gearbox"

HOW did he fill it ??? The reason I ask is this. The ONLY way to refil is through the thin dipstick tube.

Some "Muppets" that do not know, tend to unscrew the large 22mm bolt on top of the gearbox.
That is DEADLY,
because it holds the brakebands in position, when removed the band drops out of place and is VERY difficult to get back into the correct alignment. (But it can be done). That usually means the end of the box as again a lot of people do not know how to retrieve them.

Hopefully he did it correctly, just too much.

joe.

You sound like you have experience in this field of transmission, do you know what
the symptoms are of a vehicle with the bands out of line?

Cheers

Yeh unfortunately,

There are numerous posts on here ref the Auto boxes, but basically you lose 3rd gear, (Or 4th if its the earlier 4 speed box).

Sometimes it'll drive, others no chance.

If you ask who ever filled the box,

1) where did he fill it from, & what oil he used, (Has to be 3309 spec iirc) if he did remove that anchor bolt, you could have a claim against him.

Also if he did, a skilled, supple mechanic "MIGHT" be able to recover it, BUT it is VERY FIDDLY and difficult having to manufacture tools and adapters. But he would ONLY attempt this if he was POSITIVE that anchor bolt had been removed.
