It sounds very like water in the fuel - as stated above ^^^^^ the water being heavier than petrol sinks to the bottom of the tank.

Hi guys,

Did not get any methyl alcohol yet but I can confirm that I don't have a broken valve spring. I pushed every cam-follower down by hand and cannot feel any difference in them...

Next saturday I'm meeting a guy from the Dutch forum and he has a lot of experience with tuning these Volvo's and the best part is that he has a datalogger for the LH2.4 computer...Maybe we can find what's wrong over there...

Worth trying some meths before you go then - on the cars i've owned which have suffered with this, it's not thrown any fault codes up. Also you could be chasing your tail looking for a fault that doesn't exist but the datalogger says it does because of the fuel.

you should have taken the camshaft out and followers whilst you were at it to check the valve springs visually . With a broken spring there was a click kind of noise from the top on idle . I have come across this broken spring problem a couple of times over the years on these engines , so not common . and volvo had improved springs , you had to change them all to the later type .
Just found the PN i saved way back ! B200F B230F Modified Valve Spring Kit (1) x 271793

The first liter is in, together with 50 liters of fuel...Does this gives instant result of do I have to empty the tank first?

You probably need to add an extra liter of meths as the tank is nearly full but you should notice some improvement if that's the problem fairly quickly, depending how much water is in the bottom of the tank. I've occasionally had to give two treatments so maybe leave your second litre until next time you fill up.

Even if this isn't the problem, it rules out something simple and obvious that can cause a lot of problems.

If it says methylated spirits on the bottle then yes. As far as I know you can use any pure alcohol (as in alcohols which don't contain any further water). If you are afraid to put meths in your fuel tank then there are products especially manufactured for the water removal, this is one of them, how many bottles you would need I don't know, depends how much water is in your fuel:

Correct me if i'm wrong but methanol is another name for meths, is it not?

Here's a link to the website of the manufacturer of that product :

https://www.goldeagle.com/product/he...-water-remover

Go to that page and follow the instructions for downloading the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) and it lists the ingredients as :

Methanol 100%

I suspect it would be a lot cheaper to buy as meths or whatever it's known as in your country.

I checked the Dutch car enthousiasts and they use something called "Spiritus" for exactly the same purpose....That's 98% alcohol....At home we use is for the cheese fondue burner and to clean the windows...Tomorrow I'll take a detour from my work and post my findings...
