In fact, my wife was just on the school run and I thought I'd have a look and see how well the location is marked on the new google maps. From what I could see I guess that she parked at the bottom of the car park, next to the grass adjacent to cars in the first of the 2 middle rows (its not actually a marked space). I called to check with her and was spot on. I'd say it had marked the cars location on google sat map to accuracy within a couple of metres max.

See attached.

The VoC app always shows the position spot-on regardless of the direction I've approached from. I can literally see exactly where it is on my drive. I assume therefore that the app is using only the GPS position as transmitted by the car before any 'correction' is applied from the inertial system. I could be talking b*llocks of course.

Normally, I'd pay a quick visit to the dealer for something like this but as the car has already spent weeks there since I bought it, I'm inclined to leave it until I have to book the car in for something else.

Yes, that's the kind of accuracy I get looking at it on the app and is actually what you should expect from a combined GPS+GLONASS system as fitted in our cars.

When the European "Galileo" satellite navigation system becomes operational in 2019 it will offer 1 metre accuracy as standard and centimetre accuracy for (paid) commercial use. It will also offer additional services such as 'Safety of Life' where guaranteed precision is essential (e.g. for aircraft, train signalling, autonomous cars, etc) and 'Search & Rescue' where 2-way comms will be possible so after an alert has been triggered it will confirm that the distress signal has been received and help is on the way.

I doubt if it will be possible to upgrade existing receivers via software to allow Galileo signals to be decoded but newer cars should have the necessary chip-set as standard.

It is when you find the car parked outside the nice man from work's house that you have to worry!

You are correct. I am wrong. It has been a while since I used it so the fog in my brain has obscured the detail. Had a play with it this morning and automatic speed sign detection and limit works with speed limiter NOT adaptive cruise.

So on VoC app, this is where google maps says my car is now - my car is exactly where the car is on the map in the attached picture, and Google has it's location about 30cm behind the boot - not bad accuracy If you're keen, try and guess the car I had when google took the image

Is it a dark Blue S60 with light interior? I kind of think that the crease up the bonnet from the headlights gives it away as a Volvo.....
