Derek, would I be correct in saying that the way to determine ignition on no1 cylinder for the purpose of re setting dizy would be,TDC mark on fly wheel visible /aligned, when both valves on no 1 cylinder closed. If one is open then it's on the exhaust stroke and needs to rotate another 360* Obviously done with tappet cover off.

Yes it's a similar method of checking with the B16 but the timing marks show through the slot in the bell housing. TDC has the #1 cyl valves closed and both rockers equally loose. With the B16 distributor rotating clockwise, the opposite way to the B18, the slot in the gear is also angled across the opposite way to the B18. The Green Book shows the difference. No real reason for that but also #1 plug lead comes from the cap position at about 8 o'clock or bottom left as you look down on it so the rotor will also point there when doing the timing.
Having both a B16 and a B20 keeps you on your toes!

Derek
Is there a mark on the B20 flywheel?
I didn't realise this!
I have an ally front pulley with no markings(plan to do some) so my check is as you say with the rotor arm and rockers.
If there is another check than that could be useful.
Is the bell housing 'port' the remove able bell housing part under the engine?

B16 only I'm afraid so you'll have to mark up your new pulley. B18 design was pretty much a clean sheet of paper compared to the B16. Many basic design changes, 3 to 5 bearing crank, starter on opposite side, dizzy changed the way it rotated etc. Did keep the fibre timing gear but centre changed from being moulded onto a knurled centre to a more reliable star shaped one.
