Volvo do not make the injection system, depending on its year of manufacture it will be either Bosh CP3 or Denso. Both systems operate almost the same only r. The are a number of ECU input signals required before injection will commence. With out a key or fob the system will be immobilised so the main ECU will not fully power up, especially the driver circuits for the injectors and starter circuit. Before you start any meaningful diagnostics you will require a correctly coded key to the vehicle and a decent scan tool with bidirectional control and capable of reading all the sub ECU's and systems, an ebay special will be of little use.

Get and read VIDA. This will tell you a fair deal of info about the car

Without keyfobs the engine will be immobilised, and the ECU will not switch on fuel pumps etc.

I think the first step to making it a runner is getting a working keyfob, but THAT means a trip to a Volvo dealer with the vehicle to program the vehicle to accept the new key fob. As it is part of the immobiliser system it must be done by a dealer.

I came across this during a trawl through the net:

https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11005

You will note one of the satisfied customers successfully used his for monitoring injector currents. I've already ordered one off Ebay!

Oh yes, I'm fully aware of all of that. But I'm bypassing the ECU in this instance as you may have gathered. It's a fun technical challenge in a way, but I'd rather be doing something else indoors in this weather!

Already have it on DVD but it's too big to install as it stands.

Yep, chicken/egg/chicken/egg scenario. Nightmare!
