Pete,
Make up 2 jumper wires take positive to pin B13 and negative to pin B12. Remove the 5 bulbs, connect the test light to bat negative. Go to each bulb location and test the 2 copper contact points for the presents of voltage where voltage is present the test light will light, let us know how that goes! |

The bulb lit up at each of the 5 positions (just on one of the two contacts of course).

Pete, that proves that the supply side to the bulbs are good and you have also identified at each location which is live and which is ground. Now keep the same battery set up but now place the test croc on the battery pos and touch on the bulb location grounding points.

Well this is getting stranger. The bulb lit up at each of the 5 positions on the ground side.
Cheers. |

Pete if you reconnect the binnacle to the vehicle can you still position it to get to the rear of the bulb connectors?

Yep, fortunately it can be levered out and flipped around so it's easy to work on whilst still plugged in.

Reconnect, lights on and connect tester to good chassis ground and test again at the live points. Also test each of the bulbs across your test battery.

It works again! For now at least...
That's both relieving and slightly frustrating. Frustrating because I don't know what my problem was! That cluster has been in and out and fiddled with many many many times without any hint of success, and all of a sudden it starts working again. Thanks a lot for your troubleshooting KBB. Here's hoping I don't need to return to this thread! |

Pete, I'm suspecting that the problem has been at the connector. Its worth using a contact cleaner at all the bulb lives and grounds cleaning with a bit of scotch brite and contact cleaner and a good blast of cleaner at the connector. Also give the connector whilst connected a wee bit of a flexing may just reveal a dodgy contact point.

It could be something like that, given that it seemed to get worse the more I removed the cluster. I did give the contacts a bit of a flex which may have helped. It could've also been something like a bit of corrosion or glue on the PCB that I scratched off whilst doing the testing. I've learnt a lot in the process so hopefully I'll be in a better position for any future electronics problems.
