I would have thought that everyone on the road drives differently and adjusts front lights to suit what's best in fog. Normal driving conditions like I said, lights on auto. - no brainer.

I was actually spooked that my rear lights weren't on automatically in the fog but then it obviously wasn't dark enough but I didn't realise until a learned friends on here stated what should be the bleeding obvious, guess I just assumed the rear lights were on too with the front DRL's ..clearly not.

Having a blonde moment as Mrs S would say but I thought the rear lights were on with drls on Volvo, so went out to check and yes they are on with drls, but Volvo says you have to have the lights set to auto and the rears will come on too.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...ticle26077653/ Volvo is an exception — if lights are set to auto, then the tail lights come on with the front DRL, a company spokesman said.

On non xenon headlights (v40) the DRL's switch off when the headlights are activated, which I think is how all DRL's should work on cars, then they would not look like people were driving around with foglights on. Regards Last edited by volvorocks; Oct 24th, 2015 at 18:04. Reason: v40 |

Headlights come on automatically when you switch on the rear fog lights, and you don't even have to think about it

Referring back to the original question, it may be because the DRLs are much whiter than halogen headlights, and the mismatch of colour temperatures would be a bit sloppy, so they are set up to turn off. (However, I cannot remember from memory if all V40 DRLs are LED or halogen or spec-dependent. Other manufacturers using halogen DRLs have them set to go off when the headlights are on.)
On my 63 XC60 (xenon lights), the DRLs are significantly dimmer at night unless when cornering when they act as auxiliary cornering lights. |

It is actually separate lights in the corners of the headlights that switch on as the additional cornering lights - if you look at the headlights you will see the side facing bulbs
