My D2 S40 will deliver about 70 mpg at a steady 55 mph on level ground, but it doesn't take much of an incline will bring it down to 40 mpg. 65 mpg avg. over country roads with an average speed of around 48 mph is the best it will deliver.

For comparison, my Mondeo 2 litre TDCi Automatic delivered 56 mph under the same conditions. My Scorpio 2.9 petrol automatic 34 mpg. Both Fords went well under the claimed figures listed for steady 56 mph driving, my D2 barely matches what's listed as the overall/combined consumption. Overall consumption for the D2 (all models) according to Spritmonitor is 49 mpg.

haha looks like he is going to have to get used to the sluggishness of it then lol. But he does like his MPG driving back from his work down normal A roads he managed to get 67Mpg out of his 2l skoda Octavia vrs mainly because doing a steady speed is no where near pushing the cars potential at all. When driving more aggressively you could usually get around 35-40mpg anyway.

What are peoples experience with the 1.6D engine then and what sort of MPG have you been getting?

mid to high 50's reg. on a trip we have seen high 50's low 60's bearing in mind this is a D2 and not a drive model.

what does the Drive model have that the D2 model doesn't have? Is that the start/stop one?

I drove a Skoda Octavia with the old 130 hp diesel and its consumption was lower than that of my S40 D2 under all conditions. More go power as well.

Yes. Start/Stop plus the alternator is only driven when your decelerating which supposedly saves another 2-3%. Not sure if the gearing is any different as quote 0-60 time and top speed are the same for the D2 and DRIVe.

The VAG 1.9 PD 130 is a very efficient engine. Although the A4 I had with that engine only averaged 40mpg with a best of 48 (run from Bedford to Aberdeen) which wasn't too impressive

I've just bought the D2 V50 and was chatting to Volvo about this. They do remapping on all the deisel models except this one for some reason. But he did say other tuning companies will do it. But it would invalidate any warranty on the engine as its not Volvo approved. It may also be worth noting this engine is Ford's 1.6 TDCI as used in the Focus, so if you can get that remapped the there is no reason the D2 can't e remapped.

As far as fuel economy goes I seem to be getting about 52 mpg on average I do live in a rural area so don't tend to get bogged down in traffic I also just completed a round trip from Anglesey / Manchester mostly on Cruise Control at 70ish and that returned 59mpg, a remap would improve this.

I've had my 2010 MY V50 1.6 DrivE for a fortnight. It has start stop. It also only has 27000 miles on it. At the moment I am getting an average of 53mpg of mixed condition driving. I am expecting (hoping!!) this to improve as the engine loosens up more. It isnt a rocket ship but adequate, I had a 1.9tdi 130bhp Passat prior to this and do miss the extra go I got with top gear overtakes on fast roads. But, I have adjusted my driving style to suit the 1.6 and am very happy with the Volvo - I find any excuse to drive it.
